Kaum einer Sängerin hat es geschafft, sich abseits von extrovertierten Tanzposen, halbnackten Fotos oder anderweitig zur Schau gestellten Sexyness einen internationalen Namen zu machen. Li Lykke Timotej Svensson Zachrisson ist dieses Kunststück gelungen. Als Geheimtipp begeisterte sie 2008 mit den Songs I'm Good I'm Gone und Dance Dance Dance, zu denen wir ganze Nächte durch die Indieclubs unserer Jugend tanzten. Mit I Follow Rivers und dem Remix von The Magician schaffte sie es wenige Jahre später ins kommerzielle Radio und soweit, dass jeder mindestens einen Song im Ohr hat, wenn von Lykke Li die Rede ist. Clevere Texte und eingängige Melodien, die im neuesten Album sogar orchestral begleitet werden, sind das Werkzeug, das die Schwedin von Youth Novels über Wounded Rhymes zu I Never Learn perfektioniert hat. Als zentrales Thema der Album-Trilogie und der letzten sechs Jahre ist eines geblieben: die Liebe - und der Schmerz, der ihr auf Schritt und Tritt folgt. Lykke Li singt so laut und bewegend, wie sie nur kann; singt sich ihr Herz und ihre Erfahrungen von der Seele und berührt uns damit auf eine Art, auf die es Britney, Beyoncé und Rihanna nie geschafft haben.
Wir hatten vor kurzem die Ehre, mit Lykke Li nicht nur über ihre Musik, sondern auch über ihre Kollektion für &other Stories, ihr Verhältnis zur Mode und ihre Kindheit zu sprechen. Das kleine, aber feine Interview gibt's nachfolgend.
The pain of love fuels your music, right? Do you take inspiration from other things as well?
Lykke Li: These songs are my search for light. I wanted to strip away everything unneccessary and just have the bare bones along with a beating heart. This inspired me to make music again.
Your earlier LP's „Youth Novels“ and „Wounded Rhymes“ also picked out failed love stories as a central theme. Has your view on love become more grown up in the meantime at "I Never Learn"?
Lykke Li: This is the third album, the end of a trilogy of a young woman’s exploration and fight for lift, it’s like a healing process. For my survival as a woman, I had to get rid of my painful youth in order to step into the light as a woman.
However, might there be something you've learned within the last years?
Lykke Li: My voice has changed so much as I’ve gotten older, and become a woman. I am now happier and stronger then ever. Ready for any challenge that may arise.
Can you tell about the creative process of the collection for &other Stories?
Lykke Li: It was important to be truthful and honest and this collaboration happened in a very organic and spontaneous way. I've been highly involved in everything, from the first sketch to art directing the photo shoots. I basically created the whole collection from the quote "Not all those who wander are lost".
How would you describe your style? What is important for you regarding clothes?
Lykke Li: Simple, classic, androgynous, high quality fabrics and seamless design. And black is classic. It never goes out of style.
In your childhood you moved a lot and have lived at numerous places on earth. Has this affected your personality?
Lykke Li: I am a nomad at heart and will never be able to be in one place.
What did you want to do for a living as a child?
Lykke Li: My earliest dream was to become a marine biologist. I felt such a deep connection with dolphins. I felt like they were the only ones who understood me.
